The stories received an excellent response. Seizing the opportunity, Gernsback began to publish the first all science fiction magazine, Amazing Stories, in April, 1936.Gernsback had a limited budget, so he couldnít publish Amazing Stories as a regular magazineóa glossy, as the magazine industry calls them.

To save money he published Amazing stories on cheap paper with uneven page endings. The magazine industry calls this a pulp magazine and it looks like it might fall apart in your hands. What made people buy a cheap pulp like Amazing Stories? Some surely bought because they loved scientific romances and didnít care about the format.

But others needed a little convincing. Gernsback stirred up interest by adorning covers with robots and scantily-clad women. Amazing Stories quickly gained popularity. But scandalous covers made it impossible for the public to take science fiction seriously, a condition that continues in part even today.Through Amazing Stories, Gernsback did more to popularize science fiction than anyone before him, except maybe for Jules Verne and H.G.

Wells. For his contribution, he shares the title of father of science fiction with Verne and Wells. Perhaps more important, science fiction named its top award, the Hugo Award, after Gernsback. This book is a brief introduction to the genre. It provides the history of science fictions earliest roots, and shows the culture that influenced the work.More than an introduction, however, it is also an anthology of the work- not only do you get to read the history behind the work--you actually get to read the work.Dozens of works are included in this large collection- authors and works include:Edgar Rice Burroughs:A Princess of MarsThe Gods of MarsWarlord of MarsThuvia, Maid of MarsThe Chessmen of MarsGeorge Allan England:The Air TrustThe AfterglowBeyond The Great OblivionThe Flying LegionThe Last New YorkerJack London:The Iron HeelThe Star RoverAyn Rand:AnthemE.E.
